Recipients ~ Danielle
I am thrilled to say that I have finally graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from San Diego State University, have been inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, have passed the NCLEX, and have landed a new graduate nursing position in the post-partum unit at a local hospital! It has been a long road traveled and fulfillment of a deep desire of mine.
Ever since my trip in 2005 to Nakuru, Africa, I have wanted to partner with God in restoring others physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In Africa, I had the opportunity to seek out orphans on the streets who wanted to be admitted into a home and school, called Rohi. These orphans were malnourished with stained clothes and teeth, and some suffered from diseases like malaria. They had abandonment issues and some were enslaved to sex trafficking.
Up to this time in my life I had wanted to become a Family and Marriage Therapist. However, on this mission trip, God made me think even bigger…He showed me that the orphans’ emotional needs could be met much more efficiently once their immediate physical needs (food, shelter, and health) were met. In response, I decided to change my major to nursing and continue to be open to future medical mission trips. As nurses, we have the ability to therapeutically care for people in their most vulnerable states, and to do this holistically. We have an amazing avenue for revealing God’s fervent desire for their wholeness in Him.
Lindsey’s Hope has encouraged me to continue to recognize that Jesus is the one making this opportunity to serve as a nurse possible.
The scholarship came at a very humbling financial time for my husband and me; it helped us pay for my last semester of nursing school and enabled me to obtain the resources that I needed to pass the NCLEX.
I was discouraged my last semester of school when hearing nursing recruiters say that my chances of getting a nursing job immediately after graduating were bleak due to my lack of intern- or extern-ships within the hospital. However, God is above all authority figures and provided me with the first job that I interviewed for, even prior to becoming a registered nurse! He provides and longs for us to find peace in trusting Him.
I am eager to begin my new nursing career, knowing that God will help me conquer the “Goliaths” to come, and He will strengthen me to be bold when advocating for my patients and their families. I would love to eventually get my masters and specialize in a certain area of nursing so that I may be influential in helping those in desperate need. God desires for me to surrender these dreams and plans to Him, and to be patient as I encounter circumstances conflicting with my own plans, because He is at work in enabling His children to experience complete freedom and fullness in Him.
