Recipients ~ Leigha
Early in life I was exposed to the medical community and knew I wanted to do something to help others. Where else can one be challenged every day and serve people when they need it most? I am fascinated by the human body and enjoy my interactions with people from all backgrounds.
Throughout nursing school I have been given some great opportunities to give back. Through Carroll Outreach Team I was fortunate to travel to Colombia, South America on a dental mission – we were able to provide much needed dental care to over 500 children and adults. (That's me with one of the children in the picture.) With COT, I also help out locally at God’s Love – a men’s homeless shelter – cooking meals and doing laundry.
Here in Helena, I have become heavily involved with my local church – teaching Sunday school and working locally for several of our “scattering opportunities” (such as cutting wood for the low income energy assistance foundation). I also run a fundraiser on campus to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
This scholarship has been a blessing which has greatly assisted me in achieving my educational goals.
I am looking forward to graduating with my BSN in just a few short months. At that time I will take a job at Billings Clinic hopefully in the ICU or the Inpatient Cancer Center. I am excited for the future and new adventures – perhaps even graduate school in the next couple years.
Leigha graduated from Carroll College (Helena, Montana) in May 2012.
